Successful domestic cyclocross season capped off with Haring`s and Glajza`s titles, CKBB the best team.

Slovak cyclocross season culminated on 13th December in Trnava with Slovak National Championships. At the same time, the race counted as a final round of Slovak Cup.

Fast and rolling track promised interesting contest, with strong presence of our riders. First up were women, who, unlike during previous rounds of Slovak Cup, started their race half a minute before U17 male category. Livia Hanesová had a fabulous start, going into terrain in first figure. Already in first round, she was joined by Janka Keseg-Stevkova and the duo began distancing the rest of the field. At the beginning of lap 3, experienced Olympian attacked and created a gap. Even though Livia fought hard, it wasn`t enough to bring Stevkova back and she ultimately finished second, which was her second championships medal this season, the first being TT bronze back in June. It also meant 60 UCI points to her account. The second CKBB female rider, Erika Glajzova, was riding in third from start to finish, winning her first elite medal and 40 UCI points.

CKBB had it`s riders in masters categories as well. Robert Glajza, the supreme leader of Slovak Cup, rode in first position from the start, but defending his title wasn`t an easy task. He was joined by Branislav Kacina, who proved to be a tough competition. The masters riders performed well enough to even reel in the whole pack of juniors with 30 seconds of advantage, except the top two, who were fighting for medals and also positions on the national team for the World Championships in Tabor. In the race`s finale, Robert Glajza used his experience to outfox the opponent and claim the title. Ladislav Longauer wasn`t so lucky this time. The European Championship silver medalist didn`t have legs so, despite the fitting circuit, only managed fifth place.

It was a difficult race. Brano Kacina performed really well. I had to dig deep and use my whole racecraft to shed him and score a compulsory win”, concluded the cyclocross legend and national coach in one, Robert Glajza.

“I had been losing time on the best riders from the start. Theoretically and actually, I was going for the medal, fifth is a disappointment. Since I lost at the European Championships thank to technical skills or lack of thereof and only got silver, I`m going to focus on skill drills and speed training behind the car in the upcoming weeks, since my peak is in January, at the Masters World Championships and I want to medal there” Ladislav Longauer.

In the elite category, everyone waited anxiously to see who`ll win the most prestigious title. Two time national champion Martin Haring was the pre race favourite, even though he was beaten week before in Krupina by Ondrej Glajza and Simon Vozar. Czech based Vaclav Metlicka also lined at the start and the fast and draft friendly circuit promised a thrilling race. As expected, seven racers formed a lead group right after the start – Haring, Batora (both CKBB), O.Glajza (Stevens Znojmo), Vozar (ZP Sport), Gajdosik (Bike Pro), Chalas (Reprogas) and Metlicka (Johnson Controls). But few expected thah Haring will attack already in second lap. The attack was so fierce that no one could response. Haring rode at his own pace and built up his lead lap after lap up to 1:20 min, winning his third title and 100UCI points. The trailing group behind contested for the remaining medals, Ondrej Glajza saved enough gas to claim silver and U23 gold, while Jaroslav Chalas won bronze. Lukas Batora made a few mistakes in the closing stages and only managed seventh, 2 ranks worse than last year but 15 UCI points nevertheless. Jozef Palcak finished 9th, Jakub Vanco 14th, Miro Debnar 15th and Martin Frano 16th.

“Prior to the start I was a bit worried, since this kind of fast and rolling circuit doesn`t suit me and suits Glajza and Vozar. So I was quite surprised with how easily I managed to distance them and win with confidence. Compared to last year`s drama, this race was quite solid and mellow and I`m glad I managed to win my third title in a row” Martin Haring.

“I was aiming for the medal prior to the race. The race was open until the final laps, I felt good in the front group, but in the end, I faded just when the race broke and I was left medalless. I feel sorry for that, since the chances were even until the end, but me and Gajdosik, who lost bronze by centimeters, were left empty handed. But that`s sport” Lukas Batora.

The championships medal ceremony was followed by the 2014 overall Slovak Cup ceremony. CKBB had a reason for joy at both ceremonies. Martin Haring couldn`t defend his overall victory, despite having won six of fourteen rounds. Packed race program of national team in both MTB and cyclocross forced him to skip 5 rounds, so he managed only fourth place. However, CKBB  didn`t leave without the overall honors. Livia Hanesova and Robert Glajza won their respective categories overall. Moreover, CKBB defended it`s overall victory in team classification with a substantial lead in a competition of Slovak, Czech, Polish, Hungarian, Belgian and Austrian teams. CKBB also scored most victories – 22 – and became the most successful club in the series.

“From the team`s point of view, I`m more than satisfied with the season. Hanesova put in a heroic performance, which still wasn`t good enough for gold, but the silver also counts. Martin Haring performed with the expert level craft and supremely reigned the Slovak elite cyclocross. Despite Batora tried harder than hard, the medal slipped away from him again, but that`s the sport. We won 220 UCI points in total today, which is quite a few. As a team, we performed really well and won the overall team`s classification. For most of the racers, the end of Slovak season means the end of season that started in February in Morocco and a well deserved rest. Haring, Hanesova and Batora will go on with the national team, starting at several events abroad. The season peaks at the World Championships in Tabor and I hope that CKBB will get a solid result there” stated team manager Martin Frano.
